Sailing splendor - It's easy to be spoiled for choice when you're in paradise in North QueenslandTownsville is North Queensland's capital city and gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. The city is full of exciting attractions, many only 5 minutes walk from our base at Breakwater Marina on the beautiful and iconic Townsville Strand.Magnetic Island is the ideal destination if you are limited by time or if you are a novice wanting to gain experience in beautifully protected surroundings. Magnetic Island is also the perfect resort island but without the exorbitant price tags. You will be spoiled for choice when it comes to taking part in any of the islands many and varied activities, restaurants and accommodation. Magnetic Island is a continental island with over half of its 5184 hectares protected by National Park and the surrounding reefs and waters falling within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Both these factors make the island an ideal destination to stop and explore and with the amount of beaches, bays and anchorages on offer you may be tempted to stop and go no further - but The Palm Islands always beckon sailors on. What makes the Palm Island island group so attractive to most yachting enthusiasts is that they are able to leisurely put down anchor in a gorgeous location and be certain that they'll be one of very few yachts in sight. Indeed, there is no unseemly ‘peak hour' dash to secure the best position for the evening and most yachts can pretty much count on ultimate seclusion wherever they drop anchor. Other than the occasional passing yacht, sailing enthusiasts can count on their only neighbours being a passing pod of dolphins, turtles coming up for air, or possibly even a local fishing trawler which can be waved down for first pick of their ocean fresh catch. |
